Puppy Mills/Dog Auctions - CAUTION!!!

Back Yard Breeder?  Puppy Mill?

What is the difference??

Back Yard Breeder

The backyard breeder is the single greatest cause of pet overpopulation!  Backyard breeders act on a desire to make extra money and their results are devastating.  They will sell their dogs in newspapers or online classifieds regardless of the quality of the dog, they are more concerned with quantity which equals more profit.  They may have several females and one male for breeding stock.  They may have them as pets that live in the home in urban areas, but more likely they are living in sheds or barns in the rural areas. Many backyard breeders don't understand the unique needs of the breed they are breeding.  Backyard breeders are known for creating the "designer dog" by mating animals together regardles of temperment, or health conditions.  Many will sell their litters to petstores all over Canada and the United States.

There are MANY Backyard Breeders in Manitoba!!

Puppy Mills

Puppy mill dogs are confined to cramped and filthy kennels where dogs eat, sleep and relieve themselves.  Puppy mill dogs sit in their excrament and are never taken out of the their kennels to be walked, groomed, played with or even vetted.   The females are bred every heat cycle usually starting at 6 months of age until they can no longer produce large litters.  Then they are normally sold off to other breeders or auctioned off at Dog Auctions (Please see below for information on Dog Auctions).
